دکتر مصدق که به عنوان نخست وزیر با محدودیتهای بسیاری از طرف دربار فاسد مواجه بود، از محمدرضا شاه ریاست وزارت جنگ را طلب کرد اما او نپذیرفت. محمد مصدق پس از رد درخواستش از نخست وزیری استعفا داد. [[محمدرضا پهلوی|محمدرضا شاه]] نیز به سرعت با آن موافقت کرده و [[احمد قوام|احمد قوامالسلطنه]] را که یک مهرهی وابسته به انگلیس بود به جای او منصوب کرد. <br />

با منصوب شدن قوام السلطنه، مردم ایران در روز ۳۰ تیر ۱۳۳۱ در حمایت از دولت ملی [[دکتر محمد مصدق|محمد مصدق]] در سراسر ایران و در تمامی شهرها به خیابانها ریخته و شعار «یامرگ یا مصدق» سردادند. این تظاهرات به رگبار بسته شد و صدها نفر کشته شدند. سرانجام محمدرضا شاه مجبور شد مجددا قومالسلطنه را عزل کرده و [[دکتر محمد مصدق|محمد مصدق]] را به نخستوزیری منصوب نماید. هر چند دولت او دیری نپایید و در [[کودتای ۲۸ مرداد]] توسط عوامل دربار، [[سید ابوالقاسم کاشانی|ابوالقاسم کاشانی]] و با همکاری سیا سرنگون شد. <br />
